Episode 8 - Top Tips for Implementing 5s

Last month we got another chance to guest on the fantastic new podcast The Quest to QHSE where we joined host Craig Thornton to talk about 5s and gave our top tips for implementing it and some tips on what not to do as well!

You may be wondering what 5s has to do with your QHSE (Quality Health & Safety and Environmental Management) systems, isn't 5s a lean methodology how does that fit in? Well if we think about it for a bit then it'll make a little sense. How easy do you want your QHSE system to be in terms of use, after all if it's simple to use people will use it, if it's complex and people cant figure out where to find things and what to do with things then they aren't going to use them. Ensuring that your system only has what it needs and nothing else can be achieved by using a basic 5s process.

  • Think about it for a second, if you regularly checked your system for processes, procedures, forms and records that you just didn't need, archived them off then you are left with a really clean system which isn't getting bogged down.
  • If you have a well structured system where things had a place to live and everyone was clear that this is where you find a procedure for quality or health & safety or HR then again it's easier to use and things don't get messed up
  • If you have a system which is audited on a regular basis for having the right stuff and that it's in the right places wouldn't it be easier to use?
5s is all about only having what you need, where you need it and when you need it, it should be visual and simple to use, if your QHSE system reflected these things, wouldn't more people what to use it? using a 5s approach within your organisation should extend to you online systems as well especially your QHSE systems to make sure you really embed that in your culture and make it easy for everyone to get involved.
